Man Man has finally got us some more tour dates lined up! I love this band and I feel like seeing them is a privilege because their shows are sparse. If you're lucky enough to be on the east coast at the end of the year, then you best get to one of these shows:

Let's Go! Music Fest NW - Portland

I will be trucking it on up to Portland tomorrow for MFNW 2010. The plan for the weekend is to go see dozens of bands and drink gallons of Stumptown. The set up is a little like CMJ and a little like SXSW in that you walk from venue to venue. It's not all in one spot. There are official shows and non-official ones happening throughout the city. About 100 of the best bands currently touring will be there. Here are a few friends that will be there.

FYF Fest This Saturday

FYF Fest is this Saturday, September 4th in a rad LA park. Man Man & Off! are playing, plus nine million other awesome bands. I'm soooooo there. You should be, too. Tickets are a mere $25. You have that. Come on.

Man Man in the Studio

Writing songs in both LA & Philly, Man Man thought it best to record their album somewhere in the middle. They picked Omaha. Hints the band is posting online makes this sound somewhere between a fight and a party with kids and a torture chamber & a symphony, "Took much longer than we thought to create the overdub the sound of the sound of a man being electrocuted. 15 minute break then onto the sound of a crazy bodega thug," and "big, little girl" trapped inside Honus' throat pipes." Here's a vid of Stella, the producer's little girl as guest vocalist.



Anti Records hasn't said when the album might be released, but status updates from front man Honus Honus say, "mixing, mixing, mixing." Man Man has few tour dates where I'm sure you can get a preview of the new material at the beginning of September.

Night 3 at SXSW: Scoping the bands

On our third night in Austin, we didn't have a showcase or anything sponsorship related, so Kurt and I took off to check out some bands we had heard of and catch a few of our buddies play. We wound up at 4 or 5 different venues throughout the night and ran into the same crazy, wonderful people that I've met since I've been here. We had a good time despite the fact very few things went according to plan.

Early in the day, we took a peak at Fair to Midland, a band on Serjical Strike. You want to talk about some pipes and range, I tell ya. And this guy is really strong live. He's got an interesting tone to it as well. They are metal-sih, progressive-ish, rock-ish and just a little screaming mixed all together.

First up for the night though was Off!. Ok. I didn't realize why we were going to see them at first because I had never heard of them. Turns out, it's Keith Morris's new project. Keith Morris...of Black Flag and The Circle Jerks. Can anyone say legend? And! It has members from Rocket To The Crypt, Burning Bridges and Earthless. To top it off, this was also one of their first shows they played together in the new band. In true punk-rock fashion, the set was 15 minutes long and the crowd was full of people who just knew what was up. What a way to start the night.

We rolled out to catch a band that for whatever reason is no more, so there wasn't a set. We took off to see our friends Ninjasonik, but their showcase was running really behind as well! However, we stayed to check out a little bit of a hip hop duo called Hollywood Holt. Full of energy and check it out! Vans represent!

I think the highlight of my night was getting to watch Man Man later at the Billboard Bungalow. I haven't seen these guys since 2006 at MacROCK that went out at my college. I like, don't even know how to describe these guys other than phenomenal. Really- how many other bands do you know that put on war pant before their set? Simply amazing.

A little later we headed off to Red 7 to check out 2 bands: Off With Their Heads and Riverboat Gamblers. Off With Their Heads recently signed to Epitaph in December of last year. Those guys are going to be in good hands over there and after watching them, are going to find their way to your ears- I have no doubt. Such an old school punk feel. As for Riverboat Gamblers, this was my first time really seeing them play. And they are my new favorite band. I am SO glad they are on Warped this summer. It makes me happy that bands like these remind me that punk rock isn't dead.

Man Man with new songs and shows

Man Man has 10 new songs and are ready to test them out with a few upcoming shows. They'll be having their first hometown show in nearly a year and a half! It's going to be a crazy time in Philly that night...I can guarantee that. Actually, I can guarantee that ALL of these shows will be gnarly. When I've seen Man Man I couldn't stand still if my life depended on it!

Oh Man (Man) this is going to be good

Since 2006, Honus Honus of Man Man has had the idea of working with Islands' Nick Thorburn.

Here we are, 4 years later, and the two have been meeting and writing and working to form what will surely be an epic collab suitably dubbed as "doom wop." They call themselves Mister Heavenly.

See, kids? Dreams do come true! Not for only musicians, but for the rest of us craving something musically new. And I don't know about you, but this new genre or what have you sounds perfect.

To top it off, the guys will be may releasing their tunes for free. According to Honus, they are..

...trying to have fun with it at this point. We don’t want it to get too serious or too involved and anyone to have too high of expectations, because naturally that’s when it gets destroyed. So far so good, it’s been fun. We’re even thinking about maybe doing an album. But just because we only put together four songs and it happened very quickly.

Considering these song-writers, I think we'll be in for something rad. I'm excited to see the outcome of this. Until then, wrapping my head around combining the two sounds is going to drive me crazy...in a good way, mind you.
